CANOEING FOR CARBON CUTS – NEW LONDON, MINNESOTA
An environmental advocacy campaign in 2007 called “Step It Up” generated rallies of support in all 50 American states. These creative actions – from skiers descending a melting glacier to divers making an underwater statement – helped convince many political leaders, including then Senator Barack Obama, to adopt a common call to action: cutting carbon 80% by 2050.
Since then, an international team of authors, scientists and activists including Bill McGibben and a growing crew of youth organizers – many of whom helped coordinate “Step It Up” in 2007 – have formed 350.org to bring greater awareness and influence to the U.N. Climate Talks taking place this December in Copenhagen.
